300-bedroom hotel planned for Glasgow city centre

A 12-storey hotel could be built at Broadway 2 on Renfield Street under new plans submitted to Glasgow City Council.

Lodged on behalf of ES Renfield Ltd, proposals by Consarc Design Group Ltd could see a 300-bedroom building fill a prominent void which has been lying empty for over a decade since STV studios relocated to Pacific Quay.

If planning permission is granted, the hotel - which will be situated across from the Pavilion Theatre - will feature a bar, restaurant and building facilities, with an opportunity to develop on the remainder of the site.

After several public consultations and a review of other commercial and sustainable uses for the land, contractors found that a mixed-use proposal would offer significant opportunities for successful development.

Consarc Design Group Ltd said the comprehensive redevelopment intends to provide a scheme of architectural quality which will contribute to the existing and emerging townscape.

The proposed development, which is understood to be a four-star Maldron Hotel, will not provide any dedicated parking to encourage tourists and residents to use public transport across the city, according to the council.

Neighbouring The Herald and Times building, the site lies just outside the Glasgow Central Conservation area.

However, consultations have taken place with agencies including Historic Environment Scotland who believe the proposals have the potential to affect both the Theatre Royal on Hope Street (a Category A listed building) and the Pavilion Theatre (Category B).

A final decision is expected to take place in due course.
