The importance of good neighbours

The condition of a neighbouring property is ‘very important’ when house hunting, according to 77% of respondents to a recent poll by Saga Home Insurance.

The poll found that the over-50s appear to make the best neighbours, because they are less likely to let the neighbourhood fall into disrepair. The survey found that they are less likely than younger people to let their property develop issues such as peeling paint, collapsing fences and bin bags dumped on top of an unkempt garden.

Of the various eyesores that put people off making an offer on a house, rubbish in the front garden apparently tops the list, followed by dismantled cars on driveways, overgrown gardens and evidence of lots of animals.

Other off-putting items found in front gardens included furniture, building materials and garden gnomes.

“The Saga generations are keen gardeners and clearly believe that first impressions count,” commented Roger Ramsden, chief executive of Saga Services. “It appears that keeping your bushes trimmed has kerb appeal and lifts house prices in your neighbourhood.”
