There has been a 19% increase in the number of new homes registered in Q3 in the UK, compared to the same period last year. The recent figures, from the NHBC, show that there were 33,573 new homes registered in the period from July to September this year.

The growth has been brought about primarily by the private sector, which saw a 23% increase in Q3. Registrations also grew in the public sector, but by a lesser amount (10%).

In addition, NHBC figures have revealed that the over 55 age group now account for almost 25% of people who buy a new NHBC-registered home.

NHBC Commercial Director Richard Tamayo said: "There are interesting signs of a demographic shift in the types of people who are buying new build properties in the UK. Our figures show that the proportion of over 55s purchasing these properties has increased to nearly a quarter while the numbers of young people buying new homes has decreased slightly.

"New homes are a particularly attractive option for the older generation as they are cheaper to run, easier to maintain, safer and provide protection through an NHBC warranty."
